We are seeking a driven and skilled Certification & Safety Manager to lead their efforts in achieving type certification for their manned air mobility platforms. This role is pivotal in their mission to integrate certified eVTOLs into the Advanced Air Mobility eco-system. The ideal candidate will have a deep passion for innovation, coupled with the ability to work efficiently to achieve program objectives in a lean manner.

As Certification & Safety Manager, you will oversee all aspects of certification and safety for our air mobility products, including strategy development, coordination with regulatory bodies, and ensuring compliance with safety standards. You will play a critical role in building and leading a capable certification team, fostering collaboration across departments, and representing in discussions with regulators worldwide. *This is a remote position across EMEA.*

Responsibilities:

  1. Lead the development of a capable certification team and strategy to achieve type certification for manned air mobility platforms.
  2. Serve as the main point of contact for all certification discussions with regulatory agencies outside Japan, ensuring effective knowledge sharing and harmonization.
  3. Collaborate with internal teams and regulators to establish a certification basis for vehicles, propose means of compliance, and negotiate certification requirements.
  4. Support discussions with regulators on special conditions and methods of compliance selection to achieve certification goals.
  5. Author, collaborate on, or review certification-related materials such as plans, whitepapers, and flight test plans.
  6. Define certification program plans, milestones, and resource allocation, ensuring meeting targets.
  7. Facilitate the integration of certification considerations into engineering work and development processes.
  8. Engage with regulators and standards bodies to stay informed on eVTOL certification issues and represent interests.
  9. Build and coordinate a network of Designated Engineering Representatives (DERs) to support successful type certification across multiple regulators.
  10. Oversee safety-related tools, processes, and mechanisms, evaluate safety analysis at aircraft and systems levels, and lead safety requirements gathering for certification.

Requirements:

Essential:

  1. Experience leading aircraft programs from concept to successful type certification and entry into service under relevant regulations (Part/CS 23/25/27/29).
  2. Experience with certification of core technology (e.g., FBW flight controls, electrical propulsion, avionics).
  3. Knowledge of ARP4754, safety assessment/analysis techniques (e.g., ARP4761), and relevant hardware and software standards (e.g., DO-178, DO-254).
  4. Strong communication skills to effectively address certification and safety issues across all levels.
  5. Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Engineering (aerospace, electrical, mechanical, or equivalent).
  6. Minimum 10 years of experience in aerospace certification.
  7. Minimum 5 years of experience working directly with the FAA.
  8. Proficiency in software tools including MS Office, Gdocs, configuration tools, and requirements management tools.
  9. Business-level proficiency in English and ability to work in a multilingual environment.

Desirable:

  1. Designated Engineering Representatives (DER) status for relevant systems.
  2. Experience with novel aircraft certification under Part 21.17(b) or certification of functions/systems not covered by existing regulations.
  3. Experience in eVTOL or drone development and leadership in the certification of novel aircraft programs.
  4. Experience in certification of operations-related components (e.g., UAV ground stations, communication networks).
  5. Contribution to aerospace regulations and standards/guides (e.g., ASTM/RTCA/SAE/Advisory Circulars).
  6. Experience with simulation as a method of compliance and Model Based System Engineering (MBSE) techniques.
  7. Business-level proficiency in Japanese (preferred).
