Our CrimsonXT Energy team partnered with a specialist in building automation, focused on HVAC control and system integration. The team serve clients across multiple building types (office, hospital, retail, data centers, hotels, schools, warehouses) across the US.

We initially partnered with the team to successfully hire a BAS Construction Technician, (you can read that case study here) and whilst in process for this search, the Hiring Manager also highlighted the need for a Project Manager due to projects accelerating in commercial sectors across Philadelphia. Our team began the search immediately.

The Challenge

Our client needed to hire one Project Manager to oversee large commercial projects in Philadelphia. The role required a range of experience and skill, such as:

  • 5+ years of project management experience in building controls
  • Strong technical understanding of automation systems
  • Proven ability to manage budgets, deadlines, and multidisciplinary teams (technicians, programmers, design engineers)
  • A professional capable of representing the client’s reputation in the market

Having worked with the team on the previous role, we were also aware of the importance of cultural fit of each employee. This company is built on hard work and long-term loyalty – many of their senior team members started as technicians and worked their way up, so for this hire, they refused to compromise on either technical skills or cultural fit – they needed both.

Another challenge lay in location. Across the market, Philadelphia talent is limited, and this particular role required a local presence.

The Solution

CrimsonXT Energy’s consultant, Josh, led the search. After six CV submissions and ongoing client feedback, he identified an exceptional candidate through a targeted headhunt: a Project Manager with over 40 years of building automation experience, strong leadership credentials, and a reputation for reliability.

Although this candidate wasn’t actively looking for a new role, Josh was able to offer a genuine longevity conversation about the client’s growth and culture. This candidate had the opportunity to join a company where internal promotion was preferred, and each employee had a real opportunity to progress within their career. Following a back-and-forth conversation with the candidate, they expressed genuine interest in the position, already aware of the business and its great reputation in the market.

A challenge arose around salary expectations: the candidate was earning nearly $30k more than the client had budgeted. By drawing on our market expertise and conversations our teams have with clients and candidates every single day, Josh was able to demonstrate to the client why the candidate’s unique blend of experience and leadership justified adjusting the set budget. After constructive negotiation, both sides reached an agreement, securing a win-win outcome.

The successful candidate was identified within one week, interviewed by the client’s CEO and President the following week, and received an offer just two days later.

The Impact

The candidate has joined the team and is already making a strong impact, bringing leadership and a wealth of experience to our client’s Philadelphia projects. Having this candidate join the team has allowed projects to remain on schedule and within budget, while also relieving pressure on the Pennsylvania-based teams.

With this hire, the business is well-positioned to continue its expansion in Philadelphia, and our team continues to actively support them on further hires as they continue to scale.
